How does Google AdSense work? I'm confused!?

I have a website on http://www.journeyofabook.com and my host people - GoDaddy have suggested that I get Google AdSense adverts. I read the info and whilst it makes sense, I still don't know everything I want to -
Can I place the ads where I want? I don't want 'adult' content links - can I stop them? How do I get the Ads into the page?

1 - Yes, you can place the ads where you want.

2 - They don't have adult links, but you can block any ads that you don't like.

3 - They provide you HTML code for the ads, and you simply insert that into your site.
