`transfer` onto said phone? `helpline` couldn`t give answer except that `unlimited downloads` untill further notice.

I hope that i read your question right as how much available memory is on the phone.
Go to start /settings/ about / available memory
It should tell you how much is available

Or go to start / expert / task manager It will list how much free memory is available.

If you get too much on it it will keep locking up because there is no memory available to use to actually run programs.
I like to keep as much free space available as i can.

The best thing to do is store what you have to have on the phone such as contacts and additional programs etc.
Then store things such as data music and video files on a storage card
