Mobile Phone status wont show up on my laptop?

My boyfriend gave me his old mobile phone, a Sony Ericcson V630 with vodaphone. Hes given me the usb cable to connect the phone to the laptop, and when i do this it says that it is connected, but the status doesnt show up. Also when i go onto my computor and look under portable divices it doesnt show up at all. I didnt have the disk to download the pc suite, so i went onto the sony ericsson website and download the newest, up to date sony ericsson pc suite, and when i connect it to my laptop and look at my pc suite, it says to change it to put my mobile under phone mode to transfer pictures and music etc, but the pc suite doesnt read it at all! neither does it under "file transfer" please help me, its driving me mad! xx
