mobile phones on train?

i have just done a trip from london to leeds and the mobile phone reception on o2 (2g) was shocking............. is there a reason for this? are all networks the same? or is it just o2?

I always seem to loose signal on trains, and iv been on orange, virgin and now im on 02. They'v all been the same for me.

All wireless networks usually have slightly different, but similar coverage due to roaming agreements. Since you are in the UK, you use GSM/WCDMA which is on the Vodafone network.
