Can I get a "pay as you go" mobile phone in Japan?

Took my mobile to Japan before and it didn't work at all ! So thinking to get a mobile as "pay as you go " this time. But someone has told me "pay as you go"is not available in Japan, is it true?
In that case, is it possible to rent a mobile.....? Would you know any companies/agencies dealing with this sort of things? I need to know urgently, as I'm already in Japan ! Waiting for your help, many thanks !!

Yes, you can buy a pre-paid phone at any convience store.

You should be able to get them anywhere.
Most countries I reckon use this prepaid finance system in order to add credit onto the mobile account.
