Breeding a Royal python?

I have a young Royal and will want to get her a little friend in the future. What age snake would I need to pair her with. When she reaches sexual maturity at about 3 years, what age would be best for my male snake to be? Could I put in a baby male or would that not work and cause problems - would I need to look for a more mature snake or do they know they cannot mate if one is not old enough?
