Kaspersky Internet Security is quite economical if you have more than one computer in the house (ie; it comes with a license for 2 computers).

It also seems quite good - so far.

Here is a free one that works great. It scans and gets rid of potential threats and updates every day pretty much lol.
The full version costs money but thats for firewall support and stuff.
The free one scans and removes.

If you:

Run Vista or an equally secure OS

Keep it up to date

Everyone that uses the PC is smart enough to only click on safe email attachments

Don't download & run applications from shady places (pirated torrent downloads / warez)

......you really don't need anti-virus anymore, unless your machine becomes infected (which should be never). The software significantly slows down your system, for very little gain.

Vista makes you confirm every time an application is ran....if you DO get a virus, you can just deny it access. Then pick up the software to remove it. Running anti-virus 24/7 is like take antibiotics every day in case you get an infection.

These AV companies want to scare people, and at one time they had a point.....but not now.

if you have Comcast you can get Mcafee virus scanner free so long as you have comcast service, mcafee is the most thorough scanner out there, some other internet and cable providers also provide free anti virus software too

I haven't paid for any for many years.
I use AVG 8.0 free in conjuction with Lavasoft Adware 2008 free. I also run Zone Alarm free as my firewall.
(occasionally using Spybot S&D as well).
Daily scans with both AVG and Adware will offer you good surf protection. If you use Firefox 3.0 with the no script add-on, this will further increase your protection while surfing.
