Adobe After Effects CS3 demo question

Ive installed a demo of adobe after effects cs3 and find that the special effects are very sluggish on my pc. My pc spec is windows xp home, 1024 mb ram 250gig Hdd, old nvidea ge force graphics card, Maudio internal sound card. I have loads of space available on my hdd. Someone said a programme like that would run better on a Mac. I am a total novice with this programme but just wanted to try it out because I make music and am intrested in adding a visual aspect to my sounds. Also can anyone recomend any other software that runs well on pc which would enable me to create or manipulate visuals to music and is fairly easy to use?
