My desktop has disappeared?

My desktop is just a blank screen. When I first log in my documents folder is open so i can load up the internet from there, but i have no start menu and when i minimise the screen there's just a black screen in front of me!! help
I've just done the explorer.exe thing from task manager and it's worked. What's that all about then?? Thanks for the help.
It keeps happening when i log off and log on again?? is there something else i should be doing to make it permanent? thanks

well, I didn't panic when it happened to me because I had Linux Mint on my laptop as well ! well, what I did: I waited 10 minutes.. then started moving the mouse for 3 minutes then everything appeared!
