Help with hosting images for websites ?

Need a lil help with hosting images etc.
Right, so my friend has a website that I would like to help out with. Up to now I have just been giving him content to code in himself using HTML. Since I know a fair bit myself I thought that I should start submitting him the code to save him from doing the work. Since only he has access to the hosting side of things, I was just wondering if only he could put in the images? Cos as far as I can tell you need to host the image on your server, and then link to it with your tag. Anyways, just seeing if this is true, or if I can add the imges myself.
